An Improved NN Training Scheme Using Two-Stage LDA Features for Face Recognition

چکیده
This paper presents a new approach based on a Two-Stage Linear Discriminant Analysis (Two-Stage LDA) and Conjugate Gradient Algorithms (CGAs) for face recognition. A Two-Stage LDA technique is proposed that utilises the null space of the sample covariance matrix as well as using the range space of the between-class scatter matrix to extract discriminant information. Classic Back Propagation (BP) is a widely used Neural Network (NN) training algorithm in many detectors and classifiers. However, it is both too slow for many practical problems and its performance is not satisfactory in many application areas, including face recognition. To overcome these problems, four CGA algorithms (Fletcher-Reeves CGA, Polak-Ribiere CGA, Powell-Beale CGA, scaled CGA) have been proposed, the utility of which we investigate here in combination with Two-Stage LDA features. To further improve the accuracy, a modified AdaBoost.M1 approach was employed, which combines results of several NN classifiers as a single strong classifier. Experiments are performed on the ORL, FERET and AR face databases. The results show that all of the proposed methods lead to increased recognition rates and shorter training times compared to the classic BP.

Subspace Linear Discriminant Analysis for Face Recognition
In this paper we describe a holistic face recognition method based on subspace Linear Dis-criminant Analysis (LDA). The method consists of two steps: rst we project the face image from the original vector space to a face subspace via Principal Component Analysis where the subspace dimension is carefully chosen, and then we use LDA to obtain a linear classiier in the subspace. The criterion we u...
متن کاملEnsemble LDA for Face Recognition
Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) is a popular feature extraction technique for face image recognition and retrieval. However, It often suffers from the small sample size problem when dealing with the high dimensional face data. Two-step LDA (PCA+LDA) [1–3] is a class of conventional approaches to address this problem. But in many cases, these LDA classifiers are overfitted to the training set...
متن کاملFace Recognition Algorithms based on Transformed Shape Features
Human face recognition is, indeed, a challenging task, especially under the illumination and pose variations. We examine in the present paper effectiveness of two simple algorithms using coiflet packet and Radon transforms to recognize human faces from some databases of still gray level images, under the environment of illumination and pose variations. Both the algorithms convert 2-D gray level...
متن کاملHuman Face Recognition Based on Improved D-LDA and Integrated BPNNs Algorithms
In this paper, a combination methodology of Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and an improved D-LDA and Neural Networks was proposed. DCT can compress the information of original signal efficiently, so we reduce the dimension firstly and then extract features by improved D-LDA on the low dimension space to overcome the shortages of LDA maximally. After calculating the eigenvectors and a new Fishe...
متن کاملFace Recognition by Cognitive Discriminant Features
Face recognition is still an active pattern analysis topic. Faces have already been treated as objects or textures, but human face recognition system takes a different approach in face recognition. People refer to faces by their most discriminant features. People usually describe faces in sentences like ``She's snub-nosed'' or ``he's got long nose'' or ``he's got round eyes'' and so like. These...
